Hello & Welcome!
Thanks for participating in this online yoga event (Jan. 30th - Feb. 5, 2014). It is a little project in creating community and bringing people together using the internet. I believe that the internet can actually draw us together socially. It is a mediator for both online and in-person relationships. Thanks for sharing your experiences, insights & thoughts on yoga and the year of the horse in the forum sections of this blog (at the bottom of the first blog post) as well as in the comments section of the posts.
Further details & recommended videos for the yoga challenge will be posted in a few days. Thursday January 30th is the first day of the challenge. Now is a good time to visit the Yoga Today website and take a peek at their selection of yoga videos.
If this is your first experience with yoga, stick to the beginner videos. Also, find a good beginner yoga teacher in your area who can give you a solid foundation. While online yoga videos are awesome, you can't beat good instruction in person. In Portland, The Bhaktishop and The Yoga Union are a couple of my favorite studios, but there are a lot of great options out there.
These are my suggestions for avoiding injury in yoga; Be gentle with yourself. Listen to your body and move at your personal pace. It's better to under-do-it rather than over-do-it. Overall, keep yourself safe by being aware of your ability to breathe. When you are enjoying the experience and paying attention to the sensations in your body, you are better able to avoid injury.
Yoga has many benefits for your mind and body, so it's worth taking some time every day (or at least a few days a week) to do a session. Increased mental clarity, decreased anxiety, and relief from chronic back pain are a few of the benefits many people experience. These articles have the details:

I'm looking forward to sharing my own experience with yoga and hearing yours. Thanks for joining me in this community building project as we open to the possibilities of the strong and powerful energy of the horse year!
